Query Posts Widget: WordPress Plugin – Video Overview Tutorial

Justin Tadlock has just released what I consider to be one of the most powerful, unique, and user-friendly WordPress plugins I have ever seen. It’s named Query Posts Widget and it’s designed to do just that, query posts. If you’re new to WordPress or aren’t familiar with developer terminology, you may not know exactly what this plugin is for by reading it’s name only.

A description from Justin’s site:

This widget has everything you’ll ever need to show posts on your site without touching code. It’s like having a WordPress developer ready to do your bidding all wrapped up in a widget. All you need is a theme that’s widgetized, which I believe is pretty standard these days.

What does the Query Posts widget do?

It lets you displays posts by nearly any criteria you can imagine using the query_posts() function, except you don’t need to know anything about PHP to use it. You can do all kinds of neat things:

* Posts by tag.
* Posts by category.
* Posts by author.
* Posts by time/date.
* Posts by custom field key and/or value.
* Choose any number.
* Order by various terms.
* Show pages.
* Show the full post, excerpt, or even order them in a list.
* And much more…

Making sense now? I’ve yet to test the true power of this plugin, but I whipped up a quick little overview video so you can get a better visual of just what this plugin does. Please keep in mind that this video only explains the tip of the iceberg of what this widget plugin can do:

Make sure to it the “Full Screen” button on the lower right of the video for a better viewing experience.

How do you think YOU would use this plugin on your site? Are you already? Leave a link and explanation below.

    @Davide,

    Are you asking if it’s possible to show only images from posts and nothing else? If so, then I think the answer is no. With this plugin, you are forced to choose either “the_excerpt” or “the_content” at the very least.

    No no, sorry for my english. Yes i know the_content and the_excerpt.

    For example, in my blog i have some post with only text, some post with text + image in the content and some post with text and video in the content…

    I mean if possible to show only normal post with text and image in the conten. (foto-blog page )
    (exluding and not show post with only text or post with text and video)

    or

    show only normal post with text and with video in the content. (video-blog page)
    (excluding and not show post with only text and post with text and image)

    Thanks

    Best Regards

    Davide

    Hey Canon,

    You can, but you’ll need a theme that includes a Widgetized page template, or most likely, you’ll need to create one of your own. Here’s an example of using the Query Posts Plugin Widget with a Widgetized Page Template: http://wordpressmodder.org/query-posts-widget-plugin-widgetized-page-template-widget-logic-wordpress-gold-366.html

    Let us all know how it goes, and feel free to post back with a link to your solution…

    Is it possible to use this plugin to create landing pages for categories like so: http://www.planetthrive.com/cgi-bin/members/pub9990284000465.cgi ? (You can ignore the “featured” story).

    Basically, I need to figure out how to create templates to use for 4 different categories that will follow this same layout idea…showing 3 most recent posts in each subcategory.

    If it’s simpler to do this with straight coding, let me know. Thanks!

    It’s possible. If you use in in conjunction with creating your own widgetized page template. My suggestion would be to create some category page templates and then customize the loop on each one.

    I can’t seem to be able to use this plug in multiple times in a sidebar.

    I’m trying to use it twice to display the last post of two different categories. But every time I add another query-posts widget instance it gets rid of the previous one.

    Do you know if this is a problem with the plug in itself, or do you think there’s some compatibility problem with my theme?
