Add an Amazon Associates Store To Your Wordpress Powered Website

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or get convenient updates via Email . Thanks for visiting!

There are a few different ways to add Amazon Associate links to your Wordpress powered website. You can manually build associate links, you can use a WP plugin that allows Amazon Associate links, but have you ever thought of creating a complete store using nothing but Amazon Associate links? If you’ve had any experience building Amazon Associate links, you know as well as I do that to build one page, let alone a whole website, can be a labor intensive and time consuming task. The good news is that there is an easier way, and it’s free…

…it’s Associate-O-Matic and I’ve been using it for the last two years to add full-fledged Amazon Associate stores as an extension to the various websites that I author, or design for others. I have nothing but praise for the programmer(s) behind this application and also the great support from the Associate-O-Matic community. If you’re interested in extending your Wordpress powered (or any website), then you shoud have a look at Associate-O-Matic.

Take a peek at the footer and you’ll see the name of the theme and a link:) You should know that this theme does take some “manual labor” to get things exactly like you want because it has many nice code options. If you’re new to modifying themes, there may be a learning curve. If you’re experienced, it should be pretty fun:)

    Good luck, and great site:)

  4. hey there great blog really helpfull and interesting x

  5. I have tried the free version, it keeps giving me “The server is busy. Please refresh this page in a moment.” error message. The support keeps telling me that it is not their mistake, it’s amazon server. Phew…

  6. Can you provide a link to your Associate-o-Matic store?
  7. sorry, wrong link, here’s the link: http://www.mitub.com/amazon/shop.php

  8. Ok, I had a look. I’ve never seen this before, so I went to the AOM forums and did a search. I didn’t see anything definitive, but you may be interested in this reply. I suggest reading these threads and trying some things suggested there.

    http://www.associate-o-matic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1945&hilit=server+is+busy

They seem to indicate you should either try to change your connection method, or there may be a server setting that’s blocking the feed. Read through them and see if anything they suggest helps.

If you can, start a thread there and post the link back here, so we can all learn.

  9. Great page useful information.

  10. Associate-o-Matic is the easiest way to get in the affiliate marketing game. You can set up your site for one item, such as the Nintendo Wii or any number of other products. It’s great to be able to set-it & forget it.

  11. Exactly Jeff, and your implementation looks great. As you said, once it’s set up, there is no further maintenance required. Except of course for checking your Amazon Associates stats;)

Take care and thanks for the comment!

  12. I have a number of WordPress sites with several Amazon stores attached. I have never used this plug-in but I’m going to give it a try.

  13. That sounds like an awesome tool. I’ll definitely check it out.

Like you said, it’s time intensive without the tool… so I will use this for sure.

  14. I’ve been looking for something to help me make an ebay or amazon store for a wordpress site lately, looks like I’m sorted now!

  15. I would suggest this tool for other blogs which are related to sales, making money etc. I would use this but my forum has no relavance and i wouldn’t want to spam it with a store etc.

    Great article.

  16. You have a really interesting niche subject there. I visited and tried to think of some ways you could monetize using AOM, but nothing jumped out right away. Of course, you don’t need an entire store. If you found a couple items (like books about forum development), you could certainly configure an AOM installation to display those nicely.

Anyway, good luck, and thanks for visiting and commenting!

  17. Interesting Amazon tool. How is it working for anybody that is using it? I haven’t had much Amazon love.

  20. Interesting tool for Amazon. I currently have only tried ebay affiliate program and its very good. I’d like to try Amazon but don’t know what their CTR is like. Any anecdotes?

  21. Has anyone got this tool to work yet? Is it difficult to install for a relatively new word press user?

  22. I have tried the free version, it keeps giving me “The server is busy. Please refresh this page in a moment.” error message. The support keeps telling me that it is not their mistake, it’s amazon server.

  23. @ Will,

I have Associate-O-Matic working on this site here…
    http://wordpressmodder.org/shop.php?c=003&x=PHP

It’s not “integrated” with WordPress at all really. You install this in a subdirectory of your site or in the root of your site, whatever you choose. On this site I have WP installed in the root as well as the AOM files. The links to the products in my AOM store that you see at the bottom of this post and others were put there by manually editing the WP single.php page and manually putting the images and links there.

    @haydar,

It could be that the Amazon service is down or that your hosting company’s configuration could be causing an issue. My best advice is to give it a few hours and try again. Sorry I can’t be of more help than that:(

  24. Sounds cool, I currently use BANS for my ebay associate store, but having a WP based store would be awesome

If you’re into eBay associate stores, you can find some really great information here:

  26. Great find! i use Bans too on a lot of my sites and this would be a great alternative.. thanks again WPMOdder! =)

  27. hmm looks like great extension I needed for ebay, Wordpress Modder thanks for the link I ll try it….

  28. You’re quite welcome! Be sure to comment here again if you want to show us your implementation of this method:)
  29. How does AOM stack up against Build a Niche Store (BANS)? Aside from drawing from two different back ends, does anyone have any recommendations on which way to go?

  30. This is interesting - I am more in the BANS camp at the moment but I should look at diversification with Amazon -as I have made a few sales thru them via HubPages

  31. Interesting Amazon tool. Thank you.

  32. On my WP blogs I’ve tried doing some work with Amazon affiliate marketing but the problem is that the commision is so small and I have to wait ages before my account will reach anywhere near the required payout level.

  38. @ Gadgets,

I don’t see what you don’t get. Although the WP-Amazon plugin is great, and very useful in certain situations, the AOM installation allows you to leverage many more product links, more easily. I have a complete store using this installation, can you imagine trying to add all of these products one at a time?

  39. I put Amazon stores up on most of my sites, I use the Store facility in the back office area of my Amazon. It makes a very good profit over Christmas.

  40. I’ve just had a closer look at a few of your shops and they do look pretty nift. I might just give this plugin a go and see what the outcome is

  43. @ Brian,

If you’re talking about the theme I use on this site, it’s the Structure theme by Justin Tadlock, just Google his name and you’ll find it:)

  44. I guess there is no limit to what you can do with Wordpress! I’ll definitely be tying out this set up sometime.

  45. Amazon is definitely one of the best affiliate networks out there. After all they were the first to implement an affiliate scheme.

  46. Amazon gets some good conversions but I like eBay as an affiliate because I find that the prices are usually cheaper than amazon, and every now and then you find someone that doesn’t have an eBay account yet, and you get $25 for each sign up.

  48. Found this post after searching for AOM + WordPress as that’s exactly what I’d like to do - use AOM on niche WP sites that I’m creating. But I’m confused as to how you actually bring AOM pages into WP (sorry if I’m missing something here!)

From what I understand you’re not talking about a plugin. Earlier you said “It’s not “integrated” with WordPress at all really. You install this in a subdirectory of your site or in the root of your site, whatever you choose. On this site I have WP installed in the root as well as the AOM files.”

You also say: “The links to the products in my AOM store that you see at the bottom of this post and others were put there by manually editing the WP single.php page and manually putting the images and links there.” I assume here you’re referring to the four images/links immediately below your original post and not how to create the actual AOM store in WP?

Just trying to get my ageing brain round this. At the moment I have WP set up in the root directory, and a trial version of AOM in a sub-directory for test purposes. Now if I created a Page in WP, say for Outdoor Furniture, how do I bring the AOM page/s for Outdoor Furniture into the WP page?

Again, apologies if this should be obvious, but I’d be most grateful for some guidance.

    Many thanks.

  49. @ Scotch,

Let me try and clear things up for you. You said:

From what I understand you’re not talking about a plugin.

    That’s correct.

    You also asked:

I assume here you’re referring to the four images/links immediately below your original post and not how to create the actual AOM store in WP?

That is correct. The four images below every post are just images that link to various AOM categories that I have created within the AOM configuration pages.

    You also asked:

At the moment I have WP set up in the root directory, and a trial version of AOM in a sub-directory for test purposes. Now if I created a Page in WP, say for Outdoor Furniture, how do I bring the AOM page/s for Outdoor Furniture into the WP page?

It sounds like you got it installed and working as expected. However, I think your confusion is in the area of display products within a WordPress page. There is no default way to just “insert” an AOM store inside of a page, however, you have a couple choices on how to integrate AOM with your WP pages.

The way I was able to show those four images at the bottom of every post, was to edit my theme’s single.php file. All I did was to hard code a table into it, and then used the image source and product links that I copied from viewing my AOM store pages. Like this:

    table
    tr
    td
    link to the product–>http://wordpressmodder.org/shop.php?c=001&x=WordPress>WordPress http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21VM0C7V6AL.jpg
    end td
    endtr
    endtable

Another option is to edit your theme’s navigation links manually, and make new links that point directly to your AOM store, or to different categories of your AOM store.

I hope this helped clarify things. If you would like further support, please feel free to contact me via the contact page and I’ll do what I can to help.

  50. Thanks so much for the detailed explanation and, in the process, answering my questions.

I understand now that the AOM store is not actually part of the WP site, but you create links from WP to the store. So in my example, I’d create links within WP that, when clicked, would bring up the AOM store. I guess the trick is to make the AOM store and the WP site look as similar as possible, and have a link from the store back to the mother blog - as you’ve done with your shop.php page.

I suppose one could ask why bother with a WP site when you can simply create a stand-alone AOM store, but I’m thinking of building WP affiliate sites which could, for example, include data feeds for some merchants yet also harness the power of AOM for specific Amazon products that fit the niche. But not sure if there are any major flaws (SEO, themeing) in this idea?

    Thanks again for the help.

  51. @ Scotch,

Yep, that’s the basic idea, and yes, you could certainly create a stand alone website that consists solely of the AOM store. I just happen to use them to extend the capability of my WP-based sites if there are products related to whatever subject my main blog is about.

I don’t think there are any inherent SEO flaws with an AOM store, in fact, there are a lot of options included with AOM that speak directly to SEO optimization. But I’ll leave that for the AOM specialists;)

  52. Hi all great information here and good thread to comment on.

Can I ask though - how did you get this picked up and into google news?

Very impressive that this blog is syndicated through Google and is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?

Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..

  53. it used to be that amazon affiliate was useless as all they sold was low profit books. Now you can make some good money. Example is if you have a photography and videography site you can link to 5,000 dollar amazon camaeras and $600 lighting kits. I am using it for some clients of mine for healthfood supplements and video games.

  54. Very true. The possibilities are truly endless with the product choices you can display.
  55. i’m developing similar plugin but a bit simpler - extrpod - select and customize products from comission junction and more providers will be added soon

first release in a week or so …

all navigation is seo friendly, multiple categories, works with most themes, has own customizable widgets.
