Recovering from WP 2.5 Upgrade Problems

I ran into a couple issues while upgrading and although many of you are probably already done, it may be helpful for others.

Ran WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin….went well

Went to “Write Post” and discovered the “Add Media” button was completely missing

As an experienced WP guy, I know the first thing to do when something like this happens is check to see if a plugin is causing the problem, and in this case, I had several plugins that needed updating after my 2.5 Upgrade.

So I figured I’d use the snazzy new automatic upgrade that WP provides to update my plugins, and I started with Akismet. To my dismay I received an error similar to this…./usr/local/home/xxx/httpdocs/wp-admin/includes/class-pclzip.php

You can imagine that I was a little freaked, but I’m the calm type of guy, so I started researching and found this thread on the WP support forums… http://wordpress.org/support/topic/164084?replies=6#post-720502

The helpful folks there point out that there is a conflict between the WPAU plugin and the new WP Automatic Upgrade. The advice was to update the WPAU plugin, which I did manually via FTP.

Then I upgraded ALL of the active plugins that required updates. Do you think this solved the missing “Add Media” button issue? Nope, but it got me closer;)

So, I started looking at the plugins I had activated but that did not have any upgrades associated with them. There were a couple that fit this profile, but the first one I concentrated on was WP-Amazon. I have used this plugin successfully on many blogs over the years, but I also know that it’s “officially” unsupported by the original author and has had hacks added to it from various users in order to keep it updated. So, I deactivated that one plugin, and my “Add Media” buttons reappeared.

The moral of this story? When something goes funky with your upgrade, fear not, there is always a solution. Keep your calm, do some research, and reach out for help if necessary. Chance are you’ll figure it out;)

Please share your upgrade issues and solutions…

Has anyone else said anything about the “add media” option going away with Enric’s Vpip plugin? I guess with the Vpip plugin it’s a moot point but…just curious..

No reports of that yet, but as referenced (although vaguely) in my post, the most definitive way to narrow the problem is to deactivate all your plugins and reactivate one by one, then refresh and see if the problem persists.

Please report back and let us all know if you find another plugin that cause the “Add Media” options to disappear.

Hmm, then I wonder why the “add media” option went away for me then. I know it’s the Vpip plugin, cause I deactived all and started adding them back one by one, as soon as I got to the Vpip, “add meadia” went poof….Hmmmm

So vPIP has issues with WP 2.5 it seems. I see that Enric, the vPIP developer has caught you’re attention and is looking into it. I’ll follow Enric’s investigation and post back here for others to know the outcome.

Had a chat with Enric and he was looking around my site and it seems the issue is with IE 7 and Vpip. I am not sure about IE6 but for sure IE 7. He suggested using another browser like Firefox for WP admin functions until he has time to look at it further.

Interesting bug, and good investigative work! Thanks for posting back and letting us all know:)

So, does vpip work fine with wordpress 2.5? I can’t seem to find a definitive statement saying that it does. Am about to install vpip on my blog, which will be updated to 2.5 as soon as some other plugins I rely on are updated, and am wondering whether I will be set to go or if I need to wait for vpip to be updated also?

Hi Paul, and thanks for visiting.

I’m sorry I don’t have the definitive answer yet, but as a first step I’ve posted a new thread at the Show in a Box forums about this. There are more people there that will be able to confirm a solution or work-around.

With that said, I don’t see any harm in installing and activating vPIP in your blog, and when you get to 2.5, just keep an eye on those media buttons. Make sure they don’t disappear, and if they do, then try it in another browser besides IE7.

Great article. I am new to Wordpress and when that stuff happens, I just restore the backup and say, “Oh well”.
Now I can at least know where to start looking. Thanks

Thank you for the post, it made it very easy for me to identify why my add media buttons had gone awry; like you it was the WP-amazon plugin.

    Hello there!

I have been reading about WordPress as a content management system, and it seemed like a really good choice for my website. I’m not very computer savvy and I’m a bit afraid of these incompatibilities between the extensions and plug-ins WordPress.

Do you think it is easy for a non-computer savvy person to be able to install and maintain WordPress? my website needs to be redesigned and was seriously considering WordPress for the next platform. Is this kind of incompatibility frequent?

    Best regards,

Hmmm…I never noticed this. I’ll have to check my sites that are still on 2.5 and see if I have the media button.
